National Bank of Canada online systems down due to ‘technical issue’

National Bank of Canada (Banque Nationale du Canada), the sixth largest commercial bank of Canada is currently experiencing a widespread service outage affecting its online banking and mobile app platforms.

Social media reports suggest that the issues began earlier this morning, with customers encountering a "maintenance" message when attempting to access their accounts via online banking on web and mobile app.

Headquartered in Montreal, NBC (BNC) serves more than 2.4 million personal banking clients and employs over 30,000 staff across Canada.

National Bank customers experiencing widespread outage

Users visiting the National Bank's online banking website, app.bnc.ca, are being redirected to a "Maintenance in progress" placeholder page this morning:

In tests by BleepingComputer, the mobile app is also inaccessible as of earlier this morning:

At this time, it is unclear what caused the outage or when services will be fully restored.

Needless to say, the unavailability of digital banking services has left customers wondering:

BleepingComputer has approached the bank to learn about what is causing the outage. The bank is currently investigating the issue:

August 6th, 10:15 AM ET: Online banking services appear to be slowly coming back up with limited functionality available for logged in users:

"Due to a technical issue, our transactional services are temporarily unavailable. However, you can still view your account information as well as your most recent transactions."

BleepingComputer is still unable to view the most recent transactions screen, however, due to ongoing issues. The mobile app remains inaccessible.

August 6th, 11:00 AM ET: Both online banking and the mobile app are now accessible. The outage appears to have lasted at least three and a half hours.

August 6th, 1:40 PM ET: A National Bank spokesperson confirmed to BleepingComputer via email that the outage did not result from any cybersecurity event:  

"We experienced a temporary outage with our mobile and internet banking services. These services have been restored this morning.
I can confirm that there is no indication that this interruption was related to any security or cybersecurity concerns."
